Home People's rights Right to the protection of personal data

What is the right to the protection of personal data?

We all have the fundamental right to the protection of our personal data. This implies the possibility to control what is done with this data, in other words, to know who has information about us, what that information is, where it comes from, the purpose of collecting such information and to whom it is communicated, inasmuch as this is information that does not belong to the person who manages it, but to the owner of the data.

The right to the protection of personal data derives from article 18 of the Spanish Constitution and is recognised in article 31 of the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia.

The Catalan Data Protection Authority is an independent body which ensures that organisations that handle our data respect the right to the protection of personal information. This institution also informs people about their rights, how to exercise them and what they can do if these rights are not respected.
