Catalan Data Protection Advisory Board

The director of the Authority is advised by the Catalan Data Protection Advisory Board, which has the functions of advice, consultation, determination of criteria and study. Specifically the Catalan Data Protection Advisory Board has the following functions:

a) Reporting on all matters submitted to it by the director of the Authority.

b) Making proposals to the director of the Authority in relation to the exercise of his or her functions. The director must listen to the proposals made by the Advisory Board relating to the exercise of his or her functions and, should he or she not take them into account, explain the reasons.

c) Answer the inquiries made.

d) Establish criteria for personal data processing.

e) Do studies on personal data protection.

f) Approve the Authority staff.

g) Approve the Authority annual report.

The director of the Authority attends the meetings of the Advisory Board, with the right to speak but not to vote.

The Advisory Board is made up of the following members:

- Three members appointed by the Parliament, by a two-thirds majority, at the beginning of each legislature

- A member in representation of the Institute of Catalan Studies

- A member representing consumers and users, proposed by the leading consumer organizations

Montserrat Torrent i Robledo

- The director of the Catalan Institute of Statistics

Josep Cruanyes i Tor has been appointed chairman of the Catalan Data Protection Advisory Board by Resolution of 10 May 2004, published in the Catalan government official bulletin on 4 June 2004.
